Why dentures get loose—and why it gets worse
A traditional denture rests on the gums. Underneath, the jawbone that used to hold your tooth roots no longer has anything to stimulate it, so it slowly resorbs—about a quarter of its width in the first year after teeth are lost, and steadily after that. The denture that fit well at first begins to rock, rub and slip. Relines and adhesives buy time, but they don’t stop the bone loss; over years it changes the shape of your lower face.

The three options, explained
1. Traditional (conventional) dentures
A removable acrylic arch that rests on the gums; the upper covers the palate for suction. Lowest cost, no surgery, made in a few weeks. The trade-offs: movement while eating and speaking, adhesive, a covered palate that dulls taste, roughly a quarter of natural chewing power, and ongoing bone loss that requires relines and eventual replacement.
2. Snap-in dentures (implant-retained overdentures)
Two to four implants are placed in the jaw. Small locator attachments on the implants click into housings inside the denture, so it snaps firmly into place and snaps off at night for cleaning. No adhesive, no slipping, and the upper denture can be made without the full palate. Chewing power and confidence rise dramatically; bone loss slows where the implants are. Your existing denture can often be converted.
3. All-on-X fixed full-arch bridge
Four to six implants support a single fixed bridge that is screwed in place and removed only by the dentist for maintenance. What treatment looks like at Spring Valley Dental Care
- Free consultation and 3D scan. Dr. Mady evaluates your bone with a CBCT scan, examines any remaining teeth and your current denture, and explains all three options with a written cost for each.
- Implant placement. Two to six Hiossen implants are placed under local anesthetic—with in-house IV sedation administered by Dr. Mady if you choose. For All-on-X, failing teeth are removed the same day and a temporary fixed bridge is delivered within about 24 hours; for snap-in cases, your denture is adjusted so you leave with teeth.
- Healing. Implants fuse with the bone over roughly three to six months.
- Final teeth. Locator attachments are added to your denture (new or converted), or your final zirconia All-on-X bridge from Glidewell Laboratories is fitted and adjusted.
- Maintenance. Regular checkups; attachment inserts on snap-in dentures are replaced periodically, and All-on-X bridges are removed for professional cleaning.
