What to expect
Your IV sedation visit, start to finish
- Consultation. Dr. Mady reviews your health history and medications, explains the plan and answers every question. You leave with written instructions.
- The day before. No food or drink for the hours we specify. Arrange your driver.
- Arrival. A small IV is placed; the sedative takes effect within minutes. Monitors go on.
- Treatment. Dr. Mady completes your dentistry while you rest. Local anesthetic is still used so you feel nothing.
- Recovery. You wake gradually in the chair, then your driver takes you home. Rest for the day.
- Follow-up. We call or text the next day to check on you.

The sedation fee depends on the length of your procedure and is quoted in writing at your consultation—no surprises. Some plans cover sedation for surgical procedures; we check your benefits before your visit.

Dr. John Mady, DDS, FAGD, AFAAID, leads the practice his father founded in Maywood in 1977. He earned his DDS at New York University, holds a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (a distinction fewer than 6% of dentists reach), is an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and is licensed in IV sedation in New Jersey.

Will I be completely asleep with IV sedation?
Not quite. IV sedation produces a deep, dream-like state in which you are relaxed, unaware of the procedure and able to breathe on your own. Most patients feel as if they slept through the visit and remember nothing, but you can still respond to Dr. Mady’s voice. This is safer than general anesthesia and does not require a hospital.
Is IV sedation safe?
Yes, when it is administered by a trained, licensed provider with proper monitoring. Dr. Mady completed the required training and holds a New Jersey permit to administer IV sedation. Before your appointment we review your health history and medications; during it we monitor your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels continuously and adjust the dose as needed.
Why does it matter that the sedation is in-house?
Most dental offices that offer IV sedation must bring in an outside anesthesiologist, which means waiting weeks or months for a date that works for everyone—and paying a separate fee. Because Dr. Mady is the sedation provider, we schedule sedation visits like any other appointment, and one clinician is responsible for both your comfort and your treatment.
What procedures can be done under IV sedation?
Almost anything: wisdom tooth removal and other extractions, dental implant surgery including All-on-X full-arch cases, root canals, multiple fillings and crowns, deep cleanings and full-mouth rehabilitation. Sedation is what allows large treatment plans to be finished in one or two visits instead of six.
How should I prepare?
Do not eat or drink for the number of hours we tell you before your appointment (usually six), take only the medications Dr. Mady approves, wear comfortable clothing with short sleeves, and arrange for an adult to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours. We go over everything at your consultation.
How long does it take to wear off?
You will be groggy for a few hours after your visit and should rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients feel completely normal by the next morning. Do not drive, work, sign documents or drink alcohol until the following day.
What about laughing gas or oral sedation?
We offer all three. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) takes the edge off for cleanings and fillings and wears off in minutes, so you can drive yourself. Oral sedation—a pill taken before your visit—produces moderate relaxation. IV sedation is the deepest option and the most predictable for anxious patients or long procedures. Dr. Mady will recommend the level that fits your visit.
Does insurance cover IV sedation?
Some dental and medical plans cover sedation for surgical procedures such as extractions and implants; many do not cover it for routine care. We check your benefits before your visit, quote the sedation fee in writing, and offer CareCredit, Alphaeon and Cherry financing.
Do you see sedation patients from outside Maywood?
