Does getting a filling hurt?

How long do composite fillings last?
With good hygiene and regular checkups, tooth-colored fillings typically last 7 to 10 years or longer. Larger fillings on back teeth wear faster; if a filling gets too big to hold up, a same-day ceramic crown or onlay protects the tooth better.
Should I replace my old silver fillings?
Not automatically. Sound amalgam fillings can stay. Dr. Mady recommends replacing a silver filling when it is cracked, leaking, has decay around it, or when you want a natural-looking result. We use a rubber dam and high-volume suction when removing amalgam.
Can a filling fix a chipped front tooth?
Often, yes. The same composite material is sculpted onto the tooth to rebuild a chipped corner, smooth a worn edge or close a small gap—this is called cosmetic bonding and is usually done in one visit with little or no drilling. See cosmetic dentistry.
How do you know I have a cavity?
Dr. Mady checks every tooth at your exam, and digital bite-wing X-rays reveal decay between teeth that can’t be seen by eye. Pearl AI software reviews your X-rays alongside him to catch early lesions. You see the cavity on screen before we recommend treatment.
Can I eat after a filling?
Composite fillings harden immediately, so you can eat once the numbness wears off—usually two to three hours. Avoid chewing on the numb side so you don’t bite your cheek or tongue. Mild sensitivity to cold for a few days is normal.
