Each of these is handled in our Maywood office—diagnosis, pain relief and the repair.
Toothache
Pain that lingers, throbs or wakes you up usually means decay or infection has reached the nerve. We find the cause on an X-ray, numb the tooth and start treatment—often a filling or root canal.
Abscess or swelling
A pimple on the gum, a swollen jaw or face, or a bad taste means infection. We drain it, treat the tooth and, when needed, prescribe antibiotics. Don’t wait on this one.
Knocked-out tooth
Keep the tooth moist (milk is ideal) and call immediately. Re-implanted within an hour, a tooth often survives.
Chipped or broken tooth
Small chips are smoothed or bonded the same visit. Larger fractures are protected with a same-day ceramic crown made in our office.
Lost crown or filling
Bring the crown if you have it—it can often be re-cemented. Lost fillings are replaced with tooth-colored composite the same day.
Wisdom tooth pain
Infection around a partially erupted wisdom tooth is common in teens and twenties. We calm the infection and plan removal—with sedation.

What to do before you get here
- Call first. (201) 843-3312. Describe the problem so we can prepare and give you instructions.
- Pain: Ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed; warm salt-water rinses; avoid hot, cold and hard foods on that side.
- Swelling: Cold compress on the outside of the cheek, 20 minutes on and off. Facial swelling with fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing, means the emergency room first.
- Knocked-out tooth: Hold by the crown, rinse gently, keep in milk or in your cheek, come straight in.
- Broken tooth: Save the pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, cover a sharp edge with dental wax or sugar-free gum.
- Lost crown: Keep it clean and bring it. A dab of toothpaste or temporary dental cement can hold it until your visit.

Dr. John Mady, DDS, FAGD, AFAAID, leads the practice his father founded in Maywood in 1977. He earned his DDS at New York University, holds a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (a distinction fewer than 6% of dentists reach), is an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and is licensed in IV sedation in New Jersey.

What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe or persistent tooth pain, swelling of the gum or face, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost crown or filling that exposes the tooth, bleeding that won’t stop, or an injury to the mouth. If you’re not sure, call—we would rather see you for a small problem than have it become a big one.
Can you really see me today?
We keep time in every day’s schedule for emergencies and see same-day patients whenever possible. Call as early in the day as you can. If we cannot see you the same day we will get you in at the first opening and advise you on managing pain in the meantime.
What should I do for a knocked-out tooth?
Handle it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with milk or saline (don’t scrub), and try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in milk or tucked in your cheek and call us immediately—a tooth re-implanted within an hour has the best chance of surviving.
What if I have swelling or a fever?
Swelling of the face or jaw, especially with fever, means an infection that is spreading. Call us right away for a same-day visit. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the nearest emergency room first, then call us for follow-up care.
Will you pull my tooth or can it be saved?
Our first goal is to save the tooth. Many emergencies are resolved with a root canal and crown, a filling, or re-cementing a crown. When a tooth is cracked below the gum or too damaged to restore, Dr. Mady will explain that honestly—and because he places dental implants in the same office, your replacement plan starts immediately.
How much does an emergency visit cost?
New patients in pain receive a free limited exam and X-ray to diagnose the problem. Treatment is quoted before we begin; most dental plans cover emergency exams and treatment, and CareCredit, Alphaeon and Cherry financing are available. We never start work without telling you the cost.
I’m terrified of the dentist. Can you still help?
Yes. Tell us when you call. We offer laughing gas, oral sedation and in-house IV sedation administered by Dr. Mady, so even a difficult extraction can be handled while you rest.
What should I do while I wait for my appointment?
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed (ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be alternated), rinse with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for swelling, and avoid very hot, cold or hard foods. Do not place aspirin on the gum, and do not ignore worsening swelling.
