What teeth whitening options are available in Maywood, NJ?

Spring Valley Dental Care in Maywood offers two professional whitening options. Philips Zoom in-office whitening uses a professional-strength gel activated by an LED light to lift teeth up to eight shades in a single one-hour visit. Custom take-home whitening trays, made from a digital scan of your teeth, whiten gradually over about two weeks and are ideal for maintenance. Both are supervised by Dr. John Mady, DDS, FAGD, and use formulas that reduce sensitivity compared with over-the-counter products.

Whitening works on natural enamel; crowns, veneers and fillings do not change color, which is why we check your smile first and plan accordingly.

Philips Zoom: dramatic results in one visit

Zoom is the whitening system patients ask for by name. Here is how a session at Spring Valley Dental Care goes:

  1. Shade check and exam. We record your starting shade and confirm your teeth and gums are healthy enough to whiten.
  2. Gum protection. Lips and gums are isolated with a protective barrier so only enamel is treated.
  3. Gel plus light. Professional-strength whitening gel is applied and activated with the Zoom LED lamp in 15-minute cycles, typically three or four.
  4. Done. Rinse, compare to your starting shade, and leave with aftercare instructions—and often a set of trays for touch-ups.

Expect a slight tingling or warmth during the session; that is the gel working. Avoid dark foods and drinks for 48 hours afterward while the enamel re-hydrates.

Custom trays: whiten on your schedule

  • Digital scan. A quick intraoral scan replaces impression trays; your custom trays are made to fit every tooth snugly.
  • Professional gel. Stronger than store-bought, formulated to reduce sensitivity, applied exactly where it belongs.
  • Nightly for about two weeks. Wear the trays as directed; most patients notice lightening within a few nights.
  • Touch up forever. Keep the trays. A night or two every few months maintains your shade indefinitely.

Custom trays are also the maintenance plan after a Zoom session and the gentler choice for patients with sensitive teeth.

Why whiten with a dentist

Brighter, safer, and matched to the rest of your plan

  • An exam first. Whitening over an undiagnosed cavity or gum problem hurts. We check before we brighten.
  • Professional strength, less sensitivity. Our gels are more effective than drugstore products and formulated to protect enamel and gums.
  • Precise fit. Trays from a digital scan keep gel on teeth, not gums.
  • Honest expectations. Dr. Mady tells you what whitening can and can’t do for your particular stains—and what else would help.
  • Part of a bigger picture. Planning veneers, bonding or a crown on a front tooth? We whiten first, then match the new work to your final shade. Cosmetic dentistry →

Common questions

Questions patients ask us

Don’t see your question? Call us—a real person at our Maywood front desk will answer.

How much does teeth whitening cost in Bergen County?
Professional whitening is the most affordable cosmetic treatment we offer. Custom take-home trays cost less than a Zoom in-office session; many patients do both. Fees are quoted before you commit, and financing through CareCredit, Alphaeon and Cherry is available. Whitening is cosmetic and not covered by insurance.
Which is better—Zoom in-office or take-home trays?
Zoom is best when you want a dramatic result fast, such as before a wedding, reunion or interview. Take-home trays give you control over the shade and are easy to repeat whenever your smile dulls. The strongest results come from combining the two: Zoom for the initial lift, trays for maintenance.
Does professional whitening hurt or damage teeth?
Professional whitening supervised by a dentist is safe for enamel. Some patients feel temporary sensitivity to cold during or after treatment; our gels include a desensitizing agent, and we can adjust concentration and timing. Sensitivity typically fades within a day or three.
How white will my teeth get?
Most patients gain several shades—up to eight with Zoom. Yellow stains from coffee, tea, wine and age respond best; gray stains from certain antibiotics or trauma respond less. Dr. Mady will tell you what to expect after looking at your teeth, and if whitening won’t get you there, veneers or bonding are options.
Why not just use drugstore strips?
Over-the-counter strips use lower concentrations, fit poorly (so gel contacts your gums), and deliver uneven results. Our custom trays fit exactly, keep gel where it belongs, and use professional-strength formula. The difference in result and comfort is significant.
How long do results last?
Typically several months to a couple of years, depending on your habits. Coffee, red wine, tea, curry and tobacco re-stain teeth faster. Using your take-home trays for a night or two every few months keeps the shade bright indefinitely.
Can I whiten if I have crowns, veneers or fillings?
Whitening brightens natural tooth structure only; crowns, veneers and fillings stay the same color. If you are planning new cosmetic work, we whiten first and then match the new restorations to your brighter shade.
Do you whiten teeth for patients outside Maywood?
Yes—patients come from Hackensack, Paramus, Rochelle Park, Saddle Brook, Teaneck, Fair Lawn, Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Oradell and River Edge. We are just off Route 17 and Route 4 with free parking, and a Zoom session fits in a lunch hour.
